He was born November 16, 1935 in Greenup County, KY to the late Ernest and Maizy Warnock Shepherd.
Jim retired as a sergeant from the Portsmouth Police Department after 28 years of service. Following his retirement, he held various jobs where he enjoyed working with the public. Jim was a member of FOP Local #33, and he loved music and playing the guitar. He was a Protestant, and a 1955 Portsmouth High School graduate. Jim was also a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having earned the Good Conduct Medal.
Jim is survived by his wife of 34 years, Ann Ernestine Leightenheimer Shepherd, whom he married January 19, 1977 in Greenup, KY. Also surviving are two sons, James Michael (Cindy) Shepherd of Portsmouth, and Alan Lee Shepherd of Sciotoville; a daughter, Mona Lisa Shepherd of Sciotoville; a stepson, Randall Gilmore of Wheelersburg; a sister, Ann Cole of Orient, OH; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a sister, Betty Ison; and a stepson, Robert Gilmore.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth with Reverends J.D. Stevens and George Vastine officiating and interment in Siloam Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the James Dickey Post #23 American Legion Honor Detail.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. and one hour prior to services Monday.
