Field Day is set for July 28

The Ohio State University South Centers, Pike Soil, Water and Conservation District, and Mendel Biotechnology are hosting a free Field Day on Thursday, July 28, at the Endeavor Center Room 160. Registration will begin at 5:45 p.m.

A few of the topics being discussed will be Crop, Soil and Water Research, and the Next Generation Energy Crops. A wagon tour will follow dinner and refreshments. On the wagon tour, you’ll see firsthand Miscanthus Research, Field Research Talks, Energy Grass and N Fertilization, Degraded Land, Biosolids, Gypsum, Bioenergy Feedstock Production and the New Miscanthus/Switchgrass species. Last, they will have dessert, questions, and answers before they wrap up the evening.

Greenup plans Kindercamp

The Greenup County School District will host summer camps for students entering kindergarten this fall. The POPS (Positive Orientation of Primary Students) program focuses on helping children make positive transitions into the school environment. Informational sessions will also be provided for parents.

POPS camps will be held at the following schools:

• Argillite Elementary — Aug. 2 and 3 from 9 to 11 a.m.

• Greysbranch Elementary — July 26 and 27 from 9 a.m. to noon;

• McKell Elementary — Aug. 1 and 2 from 9 a.m. to noon; and

• Wurtland Elementary — Aug. 2 and 3 from 9 a.m. to noon.

The first day of school for students in the Greenup County School District will be Aug. 11.

School calendar for 2011-2012 will include

Aug. 8 and 9 — Professional Development, no students;

Aug. 10 — Opening day for faculty/staff, no students;

Aug. 11 — First day for students;

Sept. 5 — Holiday, no school

Oct. 7 — No school;

Nov. 7 and 8 — No school;

Nov. 23 to 25 — Thanksgiving break (professional development Nov. 23);

Dec. 21 to Jan. 2 — Christmas break (professional development Dec. 21);

Jan. 16 — Holiday, no school

Feb. 20 — Professional development, no students;

April 5 and 6 — Spring break;

May 7 — Last day for students;

May 8 — Closing Day; and

May 9 to June 8 — Possible make-up days.
