Two people escaped serious injury when a plane crashed in the Franklin Furnace area about 7:10 p.m. Saturday.

Steven A. Hall, 56 of Catlettsburg, Ky., was flying his Cessna 172F with his instructor Edward Edwards, 45 of Ashland, Ky., after leaving the Ashland/Boyd County Regional Airport.

The Portsmouth Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol reports that while the plane prepared its turn to head back east toward the airport, both occupants noticed the engine was sputtering. Both later said the plane's RPMs (rotations per minute) began to drop until it lost complete power.

The plane was guided as much as possible until it crashed in an open field about 400 feet east of Gallia Pike near Richendollar Road in the Haverhill area.

Troopers said when the plane went down all electric power to the cockpit and engine became inoperable.

The Green Township Fire Department and EMS and a Scioto County Sheriff's Office deputy arrived on the scene to assist with the incident. Both occupants received minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
