The third annual Civic Forum’s Soap Box Derby is set to take place Saturday on Kendall Avenue in Portsmouth.

“We will start racing at 10 a.m. This year, we will have two divisions, the last couple of years we’ve only had one division (stock division). This year, we are going to have the stock and super stock division,” Civic Forum member Todd Book said.

Book said the super stock division is designed for riders up to age 17, with the stock division designed for riders ages

8-14.

“This year at the end of the day we will have two people that will qualify to go to Akron to represent us,” Book said.

Akron is the home of the All American Soap Box Derby, where the winners from around the country meet to determine a national champion.

“The first year we had 19 cars; last year we had 21 cars; this year we are hoping to have about 21 cars in the stock division and 13 cars in the super stock division,” Book said. “We’re getting more people involved and they are able to see that it’s an exciting thing to be a part of.”

Book said the expansion of the Civic Forum’s Soap Box Derby to two divisions was due to demand.

“This is something the Civic Forum always used to do for a number of years. For some reason

of another the derby fell to the wayside in Portsmouth for about 20 years. We’re now bringing it back and it’s something we intend to keep going,” Book said.

The Civic Forum is encouraging people to attend the race to encourage racers as they compete throughout the day.
