Education grant is available

The Southern Ohio Agricultural and Community Development Foundation is now accepting applications for the Educational Assistance Grant Program for the 2011–2012 school year. Degree seeking and Career Training applicants are eligible for up to $3,250 in grants while non-degreed coursework applicants are eligible for up to $500 reimbursement. Tobacco quota owners, quota owners/growers, or grower/tenants of Farm Service Agency (FSA) record in any single crop year from 1997 through 2004 and their immediate family dependents are eligible to apply for the Program. Applications and guidelines are available at your local FSA Office, the Foundation Office or online at www.soacdf.net.

OLBH presents stroke education

Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital (OLBH) will host a free stroke education luncheon and health screenings at 11 a.m. Monday, May 16, on the fifth floor of Bellefonte Centre (1000 Ashland Drive) on the OLBH campus in Russell, Ky.

Speaking at the event will be OLBH stroke medical director Melissa Smith, D.O. Her topic will be “Explaining Stroke.” Health screenings include checks for blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar. For those with children, a supervised kids-area with games and health information will be available.

Summer reading kicks off

The seventh annual Greenup County free Summer Reading Kick-Off will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 12, at the Greenup Christian Church Life Center, Main Street, Greenup, Ky. The library staff will offering a “fast pass” again this year so that you can skip the registration line and come early; sign up at the local Greenup County Library branch or the Bookmobile by May 10 to receive a “fast pass” and get in at 5:30 p.m. instead of 6 p.m. (no waiting in line). They will have free food, games, inflatables, and prizes, and Greg Goode will be back to do face painting again. Call Vicki at the Flatwoods Branch at (606) 836-3771 for more information.
