Hillbilly Heroin: Not the face of Scioto County

With all the attention given to the recently aired episode of A&Es’ Intervention, so lovingly titled “Hillbilly Heroin,” I can fully understand why some, if not all, of the community are irate about it.

Having lived in Scioto County my whole life I couldn’t blame some of the users. I’ve never used any substance FYI. This city and this region are depressing places, with its bleak landscapes and the absolute feeling of hopelessness.

On the show the viewers were shown the Portsmouth area as being on economic decline since the fifties and the people that were featured make the rest of us look like single-toothed morons. I was born in this region and know others who were born and raised here and they are intelligent thinking people. They don’t have any substance addictions.

On the show some rehab facilities were featured and I must commend them for their work trying to help these people.

On the program they showed Governor Kasich; he shared his comments and his “plan” for the drug problem. I must ask this question: how can a man who has never lived in Scioto County know what is best for the county?

Ask anyone who has lived here for any length of time, especially folks who are native to Scioto County, they can tell you no matter how many times politicians promise to help the area, it has had little to no effect whatsoever.

The notion of the Appalachian people and especially the Scioto County area being pill popping hicks is simply untrue. In a small way I hope the local residents who did watch the show can have a “look in the mirror” moment and will work to restore the once admirable reputation the community had prior to the regional economic decline.

Just in case you haven't noticed, we are living in one of Ohio's "ghetto counties" in our end of the state. There is no sense of hopelessness, quite the contray. A lot of people in Scioto County have hope. They hope to get into the welfare system and live the rest of their lives without working while the rest of us work to support them. Don't say I don't know what I'm talking about because I was there myself. They asked me what I wanted out of the system and I said I want out of the system. They looked all over the forms and told me "There's no check box for that." I wanted to go back to work and they didn't know what to do with me. I made it out and have been working every day for over 15 years. Granted, I work out of town but I'm working. My mom said idle hands are the devil's workshop so get out of the system, get a job and you won't have time for crime. I know some people end up on the Oxy-Carousel accidentally and that's the fault of lazy physicians. All I'm saying is you make your life for yourself.

Garrett,

You are so on it.

Trying as you testify is not enough.

Strickland was from here and did not even do as much as Kasich has already done paying attention to us.

Scioto County leaders are just all talk, no action, 8 to 5'ers. Take the money and run.

Why don't your become a County Commissioner, or Auditor, don't worry about qualifications or any of that for what have they done?

For with you in there, they will at least not go backwards, with deficits, etc. They can fire their cousins, etc.
