About 1:22 a.m. Friday, the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from 204 Delores Ave., South Point. According to deputies, Robin D. Shepard, 49, said that she had been shot in the upper torso by her husband, Larry E. Shepard, 69. She told dispatchers she and her husband had argued earlier in the evening, but that the situation had improved, and both went to bed. She said that during the night her husband shot her in the upper torso. She said she was able to flee the bedroom, then called 911.
Deputies from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the South Point Police Department arrived and entered the residence. The officers reportedly found Robin Shepard in an upstairs closet. They then discovered Larry Shepard in an upstairs bedroom with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the head.
Lawrence County EMS arrived at the scene and began to administer aid. Robin Shepard was transported to Cabell Huntington Hospital by EMS. Larry Shepard was pronounced dead a short time later.
“We are looking at this objectively,” Sheriff Jeff Lawless said. “Our initial investigation leads us to believe that the male subject shot the female and then turned the gun on himself. The male subject showed no signs of life at the time of the deputies arrival and a handgun was found in his hand.”
Lawless said the investigation is continuing.
