OTWAY — A mother and her young child were seriously injured in a one-car accident about 12:45 p.m. Tuesday on Ohio 73 a couple of miles east of Rarden.

Toni Briggs, 28, and her 3-year-old daughter, Jaysie, were transported by ambulance to Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, then both later taken by helicopter to Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington, W.Va.

The helicopter had intended to transport them from the accident scene, but overcast skies prevented that, according to the report by the Ohio State Highway Patrol Post at Portsmouth.

Skies later cleared and the medical helicopter was able to transport them from SOMC.

State police Trooper Brian Conley said Briggs was driving a 1998 Oldsmobile four-door sedan east on Ohio 73 when she lost control. The car went off the right side of the highway, struck a tree and overturned onto its top.

The child was riding in a safety seat but might have suffered some broken bones, Conley said.

Officials at Cabell Huntington did not immediately return a phone call seeking information on the condition of the two.

What capability is SOMC missing that so many patients are flown to other hospitals?
