The driver of a car pulled over Monday by a trooper with the Ohio State Highway Patrol, on what the Patrol called a normal traffic stop, died later of an apparent drug overdose.

A call came in to the OSHP’s Portsmouth Post reporting a driver seen on U.S. 23 north of the city who appeared to be operating under the influence.

The car was pulled over a short time later. The trooper, approaching the car to question the driver and a passenger, said he noticed that the driver was not acting quite right.

An ambulance was called for the driver, identified as 44-year-old Scott Groves. He died later of an apparent overdose, the Patrol said.
