SOUTH POINT — A bomb threat triggered a large, coordinated search effort Thursday morning in Lawrence County but no explosive materials were found.

According to Lawrence County Sheriff Jeff Lawless, an unknown male called the Lawrence County 911 Dispatch Center about 1:20 a.m. Thursday and said there was a bomb behind the Engine Inc. building in the Lawrence County Industrial Park in South Point.

Specifics about the caller’s statements are not being released at this time.

The building was closed and unoccupied at the time of the call and there are no houses in the immediate area of threat, but nearby houses were placed on a voluntary evacuation. Parts of County Road 1 were also closed for safety reasons.

The search included the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, the Lawrence County EMS, the South Point Fire Department, the Perry Township Fire Department, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Lawrence County EMA and the Burlington Fire Department.

Sheriff Lawless also requested the assistance of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office bomb sniffing canine. The dog and handler thoroughly search the area, Lawless said, but found nothing suspicious. The search area was cleared and re-opened about 7 a.m.

The 911 phone call was traced to a pay phone at a nearby business. No one was found in the area but the phone was taken as evidence and will be checked for fingerprints. Detectives will also review video tape of the business and another nearby business in hopes that the caller was captured on surveillance video.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to contact the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office.
