Shawnee State opened the day with a 5-1 win. The Bears didn't hesitate to get on the board as they scored two runs in the first. Junior Kendal Coleman reached on a walk and then scored as senior Phillip Butler ripped a triple to right field. Junior Danny Gesick followed with a sacrifice fly to left to score pinch runner Quentin Everman, giving the Bears the 2-0 lead.
After doubling to left field, Blake Debacher got the Patriots on the board in the second inning as he crossed the plate on a single by Josh Wood.
Shawnee State posted two more runs in the third to extend their lead. Coleman doubled down the left field line and Butler followed by reaching on a walk. Sophomore Colin Keim hit a two-run double down the right field line, scoring Coleman and pinch runner Everman to give the Bears the 4-1 lead.
In the top of the fourth, the Patriots' had opportunities to add runs, but were unable to capitalize. Debacher led the inning off with a single and Charles Hyde reach as he was hit by the pitcher. A single by Wood through the middle had Debacher heading home where SSU's centerfielder launched the ball home where Debacher was thrown out. Thomas Noll followed with a single to left field to load the bases for the Patriots and bringing UC's slugger Justin Jackson to the plate. Jackson, who entered the game batting .357, hit the ball to third baseman Cody Morrison who threw the ball home and catcher Phillip Butler hurled the ball to first baseman Danny Gesick to get the double play and end the inning without a Patriot run. The Patriots were unable to post another run the rest of the game.
Shawnee State capped off their 5-1 win as junior Zac Alexander scored on a wild pitch in the sixth.
Butler finished the game 2-for-2 at the plate with a double and a triple.
Junior Carter Bledsoe improve to 3-4 on the mound with the win. He pitched 3.1 innings and allowed one run on seven hits and a walk. Freshman Josh Kauffman relieved Bledsoe and pitched 1.2 innings and didn't allow a hit. Sophomore Jordan Williams and junior Austin Dunfee worked the final 2.0 innings and allowed one hit a piece.
UC's Clint Davis was tagged with the loss as he pitched 2.0 innings allowing two runs on one hit, two walks, while striking out two.
In the final game of the series, junior Danny Gesick went 3-for-4 at the plate with two homeruns and five RBI's but it wasn't enough as the Patriots took the final game of the series 12-6.
The Cumberlands scored six runs in the first inning and never trailed the remainder of the game. Jackson led off the game reaching on a error by SSU's shortstop Zac Alexander. A single by Jared Martin advanced Jackson to second. Pitcher Austin Dunfee walked CU's Debacher to load the bases. A fly out by Bennett, gave the Bears the first out of the inning. Dunfee then hit Jeff Davison to allowed Jackson to cross the plate. Hyde followed with a double to left field, scoring two runs. A three-run homerun over the left field walk gave the Patriots the 6-0 lead to open game two.
Shawnee State cut into the Patriots led in the first. Coleman singled and advanced as Butler reached on a hit by pitch. Gesick knocked in Coleman with a single to right field. Pinch runner Camden Sauls scored on a base hit to center field by Alexander, cutting the lead to 6-2.
Davison led off the third inning with a double and then scored on a SSU error, to extend the lead to 7-2.
Gesick smashed a two-run homerun over the left field in the bottom of the fourth, slashing the Patriots lead to 7-4. The Patriots responded with another run in the fourth to take the 8-4 lead. Gesick hit another two-run bomb in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Patriots lead to 8-6, but the Bears wouldn't score again in the game. The Patriot would cap off their victory scoring four runs in the final three innings to win 12-6 and split the series.
Alexander and Butler each went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Dunfee was tagged with loss and falls to 3-2 on the mound. He pitched 3.2 innings allowing eight runs (two earned) on nine hits and two walks. Sophomore Will Middleton worked 1.2 innings allowing one run (unearned) on one hit and a walk. SSU closer Jordan Williams worked the final 1.2 innings and allowed three runs on three hits while striking out two.
Brandon Williams got the win for Cumberlands. He started and worked 6.0 innings allowing six runs on 10 hits.
Shawnee State will travel to Ohio Dominican on Wednesday, March 6 for a non-conference game which is slated to start at 4:00 p.m. The Bears return home on Friday and Saturday to host the University of Virginia at Wise. Friday's doubleheader is set for 1:00 p.m. Saturday will be Senior Day at Branch Rickey Park and is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
