She was born Dec. 14, 1921 in Boyd Co., Ky., a daughter of the late William Melvin and Nola Gayhart Smith.
Essie was a homemaker, a member of Bethany Baptist Church, and a 1939 McDermott High School graduate.
She is survived by four sons Greg (Sandy) Compton of Lucasville, Steven (Connie) Compton of West Portsmouth, Robert (Brenda) Compton of Rosemount, and Roger (Rhonda) Compton of West Portsmouth; seven grandchildren, Mary Slone, Greg Compton Jr., Matthew Compton, Douglas Compton, Melanie Evans, Kyle Compton, and Jared Compton; four great-grandchildren, Rebekah Slone, Rachael Slone, Samantha Compton, and Katie Compton; and one sister Lois Sly of Lucasville.
She was also preceded in death by her husband Robert Leroy Compton, April 22, 2003; one great-granddaughter, Allison Slone; three brothers, James, Paul, and Fredrick Smith; two sisters Nola Smith and Mildred Thompson.
Funeral services will be conducted at noon Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011 at Bethany Baptist Church in Rushtown with Pastors Al Malo and James Hobbs officiating. Burial will follow in Rushtown Cemetery. Friends may call 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the McKinley Funeral Home in Lucasville and an hour before the funeral Wednesday at the church.
