Minford Superintendent Mark Wilcheck is among three finalists for the job of superintendent at Western Brown Local School District in Mt. Orab, Ohio.

Previously at Cardington Local Schools, north of Columbus, Wilcheck was a finalist for the superintendent position at Portsmouth City Schools in 2008, and lost the seat to Don Armstrong (who was replaced by Scott Dutey last year). In 2009, Wilcheck was exploring Scioto County again when he was hired as superintendent at Minford.

He said at that time that he really wanted to move to southern Ohio, and was looking forward to having more students at Minford than were at Cardington.

Western Brown School Board President Richard Pride confirmed Friday that Wilcheck is now a finalist for superintendent — along with Brian Ruckle, superintendent at Blanchester School in Claremont County, and Chris Burrows, high school principal at Hillsboro School in Highland County.

“It was in December that the other superintendent (Jeffery Royalty) turned in his resignation,” Pride said. “He retired and then he took a job with Ohio Department of Education and Race to the Top.”

Pride said the school board will interview the three candidates for superintendent on Monday, and hopes to have hired one of them by March 1.

“Hopefully by Monday evening, we will have a selection. I don’t know how difficult that is going to be. We’ve had some really good candidates for this job,” he said.

Wilcheck could not be reached for comment Friday.
