OBETZ — The Oak Hill Oaks indeed answered the challenges from Fredericktown on Saturday night.

However, the Freddies found a way to change the questions, and answer every Oak score with one of their own.

In the end, another excellent 11-win season by the Oaks came to an end in heartbreaking fashion, as undefeated Fredericktown remained that way by edging Oak Hill 28-21 in the Division V, Region 19 football championship at Hamilton Township’s Hamilton Field.

The Oaks opened the scoring before Fredericktown tied the game just three minutes later, as the Freddies forged ahead 14-7 and 21-14 before Oak Hill tied the tilt twice itself.

But for every Oak Hill score, Fredericktown found a way to respond.

The game winner proved to be a 59-yard touchdown run by tailback Matt Smith, which was the first play from scrimmage following the Oaks’ final score — a 43-yard strike from quarterback Jesse Slone to wide receiver Jesse Parker with seven minutes remaining.

The Oaks tried to tie the game a third and final time, and drove nine plays to the Freddie 37-yard-line, but Fredericktown’s Nathan Cubbage intercepted Slone for the third — and final — time with 2:15 to play.

The Oaks — on the other hand — saw their season end at 11-2, which marked only their third defeat in their last 29 games.
