Southern Ohio Medical Center will offer a Diabetes Prevention and Control Program Dec. 6 for anyone with type I or II diabetes or diagnosed as pre-diabetic. The program is funded by a $200,000 grant awarded to SOMC by the Ohio Department of Health, Office of Healthy Ohio/Bureau of Health Promotion and Risk Reduction.
The program is offered in a 10-week session format. For each week of the program, participants will meet for two hours to focus on education topics related to diabetes self-management, as well as the importance of fitness and exercise. The second hour of the session will feature group exercise at the SOMC LIFE Center.
“We want to ensure that participants have all the resources necessary to successfully manage the disease on their own once the program is complete,” Tiffany Hadsell, diabetes educator, said. “Not only will this include one-on-one education time with clinical dieticians, exercise physiologists and diabetes experts, but we’ll also provide important supplies needed to monitor the disease, like glucometers, test strips and lancets.”
“We hope that this combination of components will create life-changing and life-long results for our community,” she added. “The need for this education is clearly there and we’re happy to finally have the funding to do something about it.”
The group will meet on the SOMC campus and a physician’s order is needed to enroll in the program.

Wine tasting is Saturday
The 13th Annual Wine Tasting and Art Show will be held this year at the Emmitt House in Waverly. The doors will open at noon Saturday, Nov. 20, offering cheeses, luscious desserts and fruit to compliment the unique wines from wineries in Ohio.
The Art Show presented by the Pike Art Guild has been a regular feature of the event every year and each year brings a quality of art that excels the last. The art presented for sale features works in 10 mediums and may be viewed throughout the day.
Don Perry from the Cleveland area with his saxophone and vocals will entertain with renditions of old favorites and many of his own compositions.
