HEAP applications are to be taken

A representative of the United Scioto Senior Activities Inc. Scioto County Multipurpose Senior Citizens Center will take applications for the Home Energy Assistance Program from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, at the Senior Center, 117-119 Market St. Applicants should bring proof of income proof of health insurance payments, Social Security numbers for all household members, and proof of citizenship (birth certificate) as well as the last paid fuel bill. Golden Buckeye Card applications also will be taken.

In-home assistance is available for those who are unable to make application at a sign-up site. Call the Senior Center at (740) 354-6672 to arrange a home visit. Applications also may be obtained at local banks and bank branches, the Senior Center, the Scioto County Community Action Organization and its Senior Nutrition sites. Assistance is available from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Senior Center, 117 Market St.

Emergency assistance is available only through the Scioto County Community Action Organization.

Local sorority hosts a coat drive

The sorority of Omega Pi Mu is hosting their annual coat drive to benefit children in the local community. The drive started on Oct. 11 and will end on Nov. 29. All students, faculty, staff, and members of the community are asked to donate new or gently used coats. With every coat that is collected a hat and pair of gloves will be donated by the sorority to accompany the jacket. All coats will be washed and given to the Eight Street Homeless Shelter.

If you would like to help out by donating bring coats to Shawnee State University’s University Center (UC) or the Children’s Learning Center, and place in the box that has been set up for this collection.

Rehab Unit offers support group

The Rehab Care Unit at Southern Ohio Medical Center offers a monthly support group for patients and family members suffering from a stroke.

The Moving Forward After Stroke Support Group will meet from 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, in the Rehab Care Unit Conference Room, located on the SOMC Main Campus, 1805 27th St.

Sean Miller will be the key speaker for the event and will present education on stroke prevention. Pre-registration is not required and the meeting is open to everyone.

Library plans spooktacular

The McKell Public Library in South Shore, Ky., will host a Halloween Spooktacular at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28. There will be games, prizes, refreshments and costume judging. Children of all ages are invited to attend. For more information call (606) 932-4478.

Health department gives vaccine

The Scioto County Health Department will conduct flue shot clinics from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday and Friday. The flu vaccine is available for anyone 6 months and older.

The clinic is located on the second floor of the Scioto County Courthouse, Room 211, 602 Seventh St., Portsmouth.

There will be a $20 charge and no charge for those with Medicaid or Medicare Part B for the flu vaccine.

There will be a $30 charge and no charge for those with Medicaid or Medicare Part B for the pneumonia vaccine.
