Clay takes first meeting, 7-2

RUBYVILLE – Hannah Oliver was in trouble on the mound for the Panthers. It was the top of the second inning and the bases were loaded: one on an error, another a walk, another a single. The Notre Dame Lady Titans looked to have a big inning.

They didn’t. The freshman pitcher kept her poise, dug in, and struck out the next three batters. Her resilience was a theme of the game as she totaled 10 strikeouts throughout the contest.

The first points would be scored by the Titans though, coming off a two-run double in the third. Oliver would fight back again, striking out two more batters to end the inning.

Clay came back with some offense of their own in the bottom of the third. Bre Donahoe would finish off the big inning with a 2-RBI single, to put the score at 4-2 in favor of the Panthers. They wouldn’t look back.

“Early in the season Oliver started off great for us,” said Clay Head Coach Jason Gearhart. “The last couple games prior to this she struggled to find the strike zone. I knew her stuff is there, it’s just a matter of time. Both our pitchers are freshman, so we just had to wait on it. She pitched one of the better games I’ve seen at Clay today.”

“I really do enjoy calling pitches when they are working hard on the mound.”

Clay is now 4-2 on the season. Coach Gearhart realizes just how important the win is, coming from a big foe within the SOC, especially with his young ball club.

“It’s important for these girls,” Gearhart said. “It really is. They get some confidence and can once again see they can be an SOC power.”

Clay will travel to Notre Dame in a rematch against the Titans on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m.
