Bears headline Mid-South bracket

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (Women’s Basketball) – Following an outright regular-season Mid-South Conference championship run, the top-seeded Shawnee State women’s basketball team will square off against No. 8 seed St. Catharine College at 6 p.m. on Thursday evening at the Mid-South Conference Tournament in Frankfort, Ky.

Held at the Frankfort Convention Center, the MSC Tournament is in its second year in Frankfort, where, last year, the Bears captured their first tournament championship since joining the Mid-South in 2010. This year, the No. 9 nationally-ranked squad enters as both the defending champs and the current-regular season titleholders.

SSU (25-5, 12-2 Mid-South) is set to face eighth-seeded St. Catharine, who finished with a 1-13 mark in Mid-South play. In two contest this year, Shawnee State walked away with a pair of victories – defeating the Patriots, 96-46, on Nov. 21 and, 80-62, on Jan. 30.

The Bears have won seven of the last eight meetings between the two teams, though have not seen the Patriots in the MSC Tournament since 2013. In that contest, Shawnee State won, 78-63,

Should SSU win the quarterfinal, the semifinal matchup will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, with the Bears taking on the winner of fourth-seeded Georgetown and fifth-seeded University of Pikeville. Shawnee State was a combined 4-0 versus those two teams this season.
