Trojans slay Dragons, 67-30

WAVERLY – The Portsmouth Trojans punched their ticket to the next round of the sectional tournament Wednesday evening. The Trojans went to battle against the West Union Dragons at Waverly High School to see which team would advance to the sectional finals on Saturday night.

Portsmouth was heavily favored entering Wednesday night’s game against West Union. The favored status was certainly earned by the Trojans, as they dominated every aspect of the game against the Dragons, earning a 67-30 victory.

An explosive first quarter helped the Trojans set the tone of the game. Portsmouth outscored West Union by 12 points in the first quarter, 22-10. Ky’re Allison scored eight points in the first quarter, followed closely by Kendal Reynolds who had a pair of scores, one two-point field goal, and a three-pointer.

The Trojans had three other scores in the period, all three-pointers, from DJ Eley, Mike Malone, and Reese Johnson.

In all, the Dragons simply couldn’t stop the Trojans from the behind the arc in the first quarter. Portsmouth hit five of their nine three-pointers in the first quarter.

The second quarter wasn’t friendly to West Union either, as the Dragons were held to only four points in the period.

While West Union continued to struggle in the first half, Portsmouth continued to roll. The Trojans added another 17 points in the second quarter. Reynolds added another five points in the period, while Ethan Leonard and Trent Rodbell each added four points.

By the half, West Union trailed Portsmouth 39-14.

Portsmouth continued to dominate the game throughout the second half, holding West Union to only single digit totals in both the third and fourth quarters.

The Trojans scored 14 points in each of the two quarters in the second half, increasing their lead to 37 points by the end of the game, 67-30.

Allison led all Trojans in scoring, as the senior added 17 points to the Portsmouth total.

Reynolds finished with 15 points in the contest, hitting a trio of twos and a trio of threes against the Dragons.

Gene Collins’ squad had 11 total players score against West Union, one of the most balanced games the team has had all season.

West Union had a single player reach double figures, Craig Hodon. Hodon added 14 points to the West Union cause, one point shy of being accountable for half of the Dragons’ points.

As a result of the win over West Union, Portsmouth will move on to face the Eastern Brown Warriors Saturday evening at Waverly High School. The game is scheduled to tip at 8:30 p.m.
