PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – When looking at the basketball players who have taken the floor for the Shawnee State men’s basketball program over the years, there have been many who have made an impact on and off of the floor.

However, it is evident that the legacy and impact that Sean Elliott left with the Bears’ men’s basketball program will be felt for a lifetime.

Before the start of Sunday afternoon’s contest against West Virginia Tech, Elliott’s memory was honored in a pregame dedication at 2:30 p.m. as a crowd of nearly 100 people attended a tree dedication in honor of Elliott, the guard who wowed people not only with his shooting ability on the floor, but with his actions off of it as well.

“It was a fantastic ceremony,” Shawnee State head coach and athletic director Jeff Hamilton said. “We had 100 people here, which shows you the impact that Sean had across campus and across the entire athletic department. His leadership and unselfishness has transformed our program.”

Throughout the 2015 campaign, Sean’s memory will be honored by the men’s basketball program during all of its athletic contests as the Bears’ home uniforms will adorn a black patch with Sean’s initials – SE – listed in white. Additionally, the program – as well as the athletic department’s social media accounts – will honor Sean with the #PF5 hashtag – which means play for five.

“I know that it’s got to be excruciatingly difficult on his family,” Hamilton said of Sean’s passing. “It’s been wonderful having them around for the first two games of the year to help them through and guide them as part of that healing process.”

As far as the tree is concerned, Hamilton gave immense praise to the various departments around the university who helped with the shaping of the tree.

“It’s nice that we can sit here in my office and look out and see the tree,” Hamilton said. “Our facilities department did a fantastic job and our development office did an outstanding job getting everything ready. The tree serves as a reminder that Sean’s still with us.”

Hamilton also mentioned that the members of the program have done an excellent job in keeping Sean’s memory alive and well.

“Our guys are very good at keeping him prevalent in the points that we talk about and do as a program,” Hamilton said. “He still has a significant impact on this season and in the seasons moving forward.”

Overall, Hamilton believes that the attendees at the event were impacted by Elliott’s qualities as a human being.

“It speaks volumes to Sean’s personality,” Hamilton said. “He was one of those young men that people gravitated towards. He was easy to talk to, he made people very comfortable, he had a great sense of humor, and he would talk to anybody. People naturally rooted for and liked Sean because of those qualities.”
