Waverly- The chilling rain didn’t let up Tuesday night at the newly renovated Waverly Tigers facility. Neither did the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs.

The Minford Falcons succumbed to the Mustangs by a score of 9-0 in 2015 Southeastern District Division III Semifinal game. The Mustangs dominated the ball, keeping Minford on their heels and on their side of the field most of the game. Minford Goalie Marissa Watters was kept busy all night racking up 28 saves compared to Mustang’s goalie Lexi Waits two.

“We played a really good state ranked team tonight,” Falcons coach Shane Tieman said. “They were the number one seed. We’ve struggled with injuries all year but we’ve come together quite a bit. Even saying that, they were a little bit too much for us tonight. Good luck to them the rest of the tournament.

“We’ve had a lot of adversity this year. The season started with our two leading scorers from last year both having knee injuries. We had to adjust our entire philosophy on how to score because of that. It was a learning process, we have a young team and we are still feeling the effects of losing the group of seniors we had two years ago. Last year still seemed to come easy for us, but this year we’ve had to really work. What I can say about this group is they are mentally tough. They play with a lot of heart but they are still young and make mistakes. We’ve improved and I can say we are a better team now than we were at the start of the year.”

Minford loses five seniors to graduation: Sarah Shumway, Brooklyn Peterson, Ashley Lewis, Hannah Willis and Hally Wilson.

Coach Tieman ended on an optimistic note, promising much more success next year, “We are looking forward to the offseason, regrouping, retooling and winning the conference next year.”
