Sean Elliott, a senior sports studies major from Canal Winchester and SSU men’s basketball player, died early this morning in a car accident on I-70 near Columbus.

“The university community is deeply saddened by this tragic news and we are doing what we can on campus to support our students, faculty, and coaching staff,” Shawnee State University President Rita Rice Morris, said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Sean’s family and friends.”

Sean was headed into his final season after a stellar junior year, which landed him Second Team All-Mid-South Conference honors. He played for two years beginning in 2006-07, before rejoining the team in 2013-14.

“Sean was a member of our family and this loss is a shock to the team,” Jeff Hamilton, Athletic Director and Head Basketball Coach, said. “We are deeply saddened and he will be greatly missed. Right now, we’re just trying to be there for one another as we mourn.”

Prior to joining the Shawnee State basketball team, Sean graduated from Canal Winchester High School, where he was a three-year letterwinner in both basketball and golf.

“Over the last three seasons, Sean and I had become extremely close,” Hamilton said. “He was an incredible leader to his teammates and a truly wonderful person. We are keeping his family in our prayers in this very difficult time.”
