ATHENS — Over the course of the 2017 season, there have been a variety of different athletes all across Scioto County who have stepped up to provide much-needed production for their respective teams.
And overall, the sports writers and editors within the Southeast District realm felt the same way about 35 different athletes from the county, with each of them garnering honors that put them among the elite of the Southeast District across all realms of play.
Division V outlook
In the Division V ranks, it was Wheelersburg, behind a razor-sharp focus, who put the most players on the list. The Pirates not only put 10 players on the team — including a county-best seven on the Division V First-Team All-Southeast District list — but also swept each of the main Division V awards as Tanner Holden, Xander Carmichael, and Rob Woodward obtained the Division V Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, and Coach of the Year awards.
Holden, along with fellow wideout Cole Lowery, combined for an astonishing 2,007 receiving yards and 21 touchdown catches on 110 receptions in 2017 en route to starting off the Pirates’ raid. Holden, on his own, has already obtained 1,266 yards and 18 touchdown receptions on 64 catches through 11 games. Trent Salyers’ effectiveness at the quarterback position has also been influential to the success of the Wheelersburg offense, as the first-year signal-caller has already collected 2,872 passing yards to go along with 30 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 2017 from the quarterback position. Jeremy Cooper joined the trio from his offensive line position to round out the group.
Defensively, Carmichael’s 64 tackles and two interceptions, along with Nic Parsley’s 57 tackles and four sacks, allowed the duo to earn First-Team All-District. Makya Matthews, who holds a team-high three picks in 2017, rounded out the First-Team list. Star cornerback Bryson Keeney, along with offensive linemen CJ Hall and Alex George, each made the honorable mention list.
West, who has posted an outstanding season in its own right, followed by putting eight individuals on the list, including five on the first team.
Garrett Hurd, who rushed for 1,169 yards and 11 touchdowns on 196 carries during the regular season, led the charge, while offensive lineman Caleb Deaver and Drew Cassidy, a 5-10, 155-pound senior that made 39 of his 40 extra points and seven of his nine field goals with a long of 44 yards, joined Hurd on the main squad.
Defensive lineman Jakeb Guilkey (86 tackles, 13 for a loss, five sacks) and Cody Staggs, who obtained a team-high five interceptions, led the charge for a defensive unit that finished with a plus-eight turnover margin during the regular season and joined the aforementioned trio on the list.
From an honorable mention standpoint, the abilities of Brandon Weaver (71 tackles, 16 for a loss, five sacks) and Josh Berry (63 tackles, four sacks, three interceptions in just eight games), along with Kane Lewis, an effective two-way player who improved throughout the season, rounded out West’s showing on the All-District list.
Behind the initial duo, Portsmouth, who put three players on the All-District list, put each of them on the first team as Isaac Kelly, Talyn Parker, and Colin Boehm all made the first team. Parker ran for 1,010 yards and 16 touchdowns in six affairs, Kelly collected 2,320 total yards of offense and 21 touchdowns, and Boehm, a 6-4, 295-pound offensive tackle, finished his third season in the starting offensive line rotation for the Trojans.
Minford and Northwest, who finished 4-6 and 3-7, respectively, in 2017, combined to put four players on the All-Southeast District unit to round out the Division V realm for Scioto County.
Breydan Tilley obtained 30 receptions for 496 yards, four touchdowns, and 16.5 yards per catch, while also collecting a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and a 64-yard punt return for a score en route to earning first-team honors as a receiver. Luke Lindamood (96 tackles, four tackles for loss) and Darius Jordan (35 catches, 431 yards, seven touchdowns on offense, 45 tackles, five interceptions on defense) rounded out the honorable mention selections, while Northwest’s Bruce South (49 pancake blocks), who made First-Team All-Southeast District, was the lone individual to make the team for the Mohawks.
Division VI outlook
In the Division VI realm, the explosive abilities of Gabe Streeter, who obtained 77 tackles, six interceptions, and nine additional pass breakups, made the first-team list as a defensive back to allow Valley to put a player on the First-Team list. JT Ward represented the Indians by averaging 11 tackles per contest to allow the Indians to place a player on the honorable mention list.
Division VII outlook
As far as the Division VII realm was concerned, the East Tartans proved to be the face of the county in said division as East put six honorees on the list.
West Virginia University commit Blaine Scott led the unit with his 70 pancake blocks in 2017, while the strong combination of Brady Douthat (74-of-133, 1,319 yards, 25 touchdowns, five interceptions) and JD Hatcher (24 catches, 559 yards, 11 touchdowns) joined their fellow classmate on the list. Sophomore Braiden Haney, who closed out the season with 82 tackles, 24 tackles for a loss, and 12 sacks, was the lone defensive player listed on the First-Team list. From an honorable mention standpoint, Kyle Flannery (58 carries, 473 yards, 12 touchdowns) and Ethan Gifford (80 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, four sacks) rounded out the Tartans’ brigade.
Notre Dame’s Ben Mader, who obtained 100.5 tackles from his strong safety position, rounded out the group of honorees as a First-Team All-Southeast District selection. A nomination was not made from Green’s camp.
