Week 9 Overview

South Point at Portsmouth

Even though the Portsmouth Trojans lost by a 62-34 margin against Fairland last Friday, Isaac Kelly continued to show off his dual-threat abilities, and became only the second Portsmouth quarterback in school history to eclipse 1,000 yards passing and rushing in a season as a result.

On Friday, Kelly and company will look to celebrate even more when Portsmouth, who is 3-5 overall, takes on South Point (2-6) at home in OVC competition. The previously mentioned 6-3, 200-pound quarterback, along with his fellow 5-9, 185-pound backfield member in Talyn Parker, will look to continue to make life miserable for opposing defenses. South Point has given up 25 points or more in all six of its losses and hasn’t scored a point in four of its five OVC affairs during the 2017 campaign.

Cincinnati Shroder at West

After coming off yet another big victory over Waverly, the West Senators will look to improve to 9-0 in 2017 with a victory against the Cincinnati Shroder Jaguars on Friday evening at ‘The Rock.’

Garrett Hurd, who has amassed 974 yards and nine touchdowns on 163 carries in 2017, led West last week with his 189 rushing yards on 35 carries. The junior will likely break 1,000 yards in the Senators’ contest against Cincinnati Shroder (2-6), who has given up 39 points or more in all six of its losses over the course of the year.

Minford at Waverly

With a 3-5 record, Minford, who is still alive in the postseason race, according to Joe Eitel, will look to make a big step toward recapturing much needed playoff points with a victory at Waverly on Friday evening in an SOC II bout.

In order for Minford to obtain the much-needed win, they’ll need big outings from Kelton Kelley and Breydan Tilley, among others. Waverly brings Clayton Howell, Drew Kritzwiser, Easton and Phoenix Wolf, and Kayne Jordan to the table. All of the above are central figures in an offense that has averaged 30.5 points per affair in 2017.

Notre Dame at Manchester

After taking a 48-12 loss to Northwest last weekend at home, the Notre Dame Titans will look to get back on track when Bob Ashley’s club makes the trip to Manchester on Friday evening.

Ben Mader, who scored on an 80-yard kick return last weekend, will look to aid Notre Dame as the Titans look to obtain its third win in 2017. Manchester fell to Symmes Valley by a 49-14 count at home last weekend.

Wheelersburg at Valley

With both programs coming off of strong victories in Week 8, the Valley Indians and the Wheelersburg Pirates will look to establish momentum when the duo face off in Lucasville for a SOC II bout.

Valley, who obtained 413 yards of total offense in a dominating 48-7 victory over Belpre, will look to keep the ball rolling as the 3-5 Indians will look to use the strong performances of Andrew Shope (8-of-12 passing, 106 yards, four total TDs), the running back tandem of Gabe Streeter and Kayden Mollette (236 yards and two touchdowns combined on 19 carries), and the run defense (37 yards rushing for Belpre) to establish further momentum heading into the final two weeks of the regular season. Wheelersburg, who obtained 475 yards of total offense in its 59-7 win over Minford, held the Falcons to 49 yards passing in yet another splendid performance.
