SSU to host Bear Madness

The Shawnee State men’s and women’s basketball programs will host their annual Bear Madness on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 9 p.m.

Bear Madness will take place at Frank and Janis Waller Gymnasium on the campus of Shawnee State University. The night will feature three-point and dunk contests, games and prizes as the Bears are introduced leading up to the beginning of the 2017-18 season.

The whole Portsmouth community is welcome to attend Bear Madness. Admission to the event is free of charge.

Shawnee State’s 2017-18 season gets underway on Friday, Oct. 27 when the SSU women host Kentucky Christian for their home opener at 6 p.m. Shawnee State’s men will tip off the season on Sunday, Oct. 29 when they host William Penn at 1 p.m.

SSU golf picks up second-place finishes at Elks CC

Shawnee State golf picked up a pair of second place finishes to end the fall season at the Shawnee State Fall Invitational on Monday.

Shawnee State’s men finished with a two-day score of 601, only three strokes behind tournament champions Pikeville. Jordan Tieman (FR/Portsmouth, Ohio) led Shawnee State by finishing in third place, hitting 72-74 for a two-day score of 146, two strokes over par. Brock Faulkner (JR/Waldo, Ohio) tied for fourth place, shooting 74-73 for a two-day 147, three strokes over par.

Shawnee State’s women also finished in second place behind Pikeville for the weekend. Katherine Pirro shot 83-87 for a two-day score of 166 to finish in fourth place. Holley Hart would also finish as a medalist, shooting 85-87 for a two-day 172, good for fifth place.

The Shawnee State Fall Invitational marks the end of SSU’s fall golf season. SSU’s spring schedule and continued coverage of the golf programs can be found at ssubears.com.
