SSU WSOC moves to 3-0-1

The Shawnee State women’s soccer program continued its good form to start the season, winning on the road at Asbury (Ky.) 1-0.

The Bears struck early in Friday’s match, scoring in the 13th minute. Maddie Woodard (SR/Camden, Ohio) carried the ball into the Asbury box and finished to give the Bears a 1-0 advantage. The Bears preserved that lead over the last 77 minutes to gut out the win over the Eagles.

The win improves Shawnee State’s record to 3-1-1 to start the year. Asbury falls to 4-1-0.

Shawnee State will take the next week off before returning to Shawnee Turf for Homecoming Weekend against Bob Jones on Sept. 16. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.

SSU men’s, women’s cross country sweep MSC Preview

While the SSU women’s soccer program continued its strong start to the 2017 season, the Shawnee State men’s and women’s cross country programs swept their meets on Friday night, winning the Mid-South Conference Preview.

The Shawnee State men were led by Seth Farmer (JR/Waverly, Ohio), who finished in first place with a time of 15:38.23. Parker Blain (SR/Marietta, Ohio) finished in fourth place, finishing with a time of 16:05.26, and Ethan Richter (SR/Chillicothe, Ohio) placed fifth at 16:06.43. Shawnee State had six of the top 10 finishers for the meet.

Brooke Smith (JR/Wheelersburg, Ohio)’s first-place finish paced the Bears on the women’s side, finishing with a time of 18:34.65. Alyssa Taylor (JR/Georgetown, Ohio) finished in second place at 18:49.24. Anna Havranek (SR/Sugarcreek, Ohio) finished fourth overall with a time of 19:06.58, and Katie Sailing finished fifth at 19:30.75. SSU had eight of the top 10 runners in the event.

Shawnee State will next compete on Friday, Sept. 15 at the Iona College Meet of Champions in Bronx, N.Y.

SSU men’s, women’s golf finish second at KCU

In addition to the Shawnee State soccer and cross country programs, the Bears’ men’s and women’s golf programs were in action over the weekend, with both teams taking second at the Kentucky Christian Invitational held at Hidden Cove Golf Course.

SSU’s men finished second and brought home two all-tournament team awards on Sunday by shooting a two-day 628. Jordan Tieman finished as the medalist on the men’s side, shooting 74-76 for a two-day 150. Jacob Braskett was also an all-tournament team award winner, shooting 78-76 for a two-day 154.

Shawnee State’s women brought home their best ever finish, getting second with a two-round score of 748 and also having two all-tournament team players. Holley Hart continued her good early season form, shooting 90-85 for a two-day 175. Taylor Boggs also made the all-tournament team, finishing with a 94-86 for a two-day 180.

Shawnee State golf returns to action next Monday and Tuesday at the Mid-South Conference Fall Tournament, hosted by Georgetown at Cherry Blossom Golf Club.
