After falling in the Division II Sectional Semifinals to Jackson last season, the Waverly Tigers’ girls soccer program showed that it is determined to write a different script in 2017 as Waverly pummeled Piketon, 6-0, in a match between crosstown rivals on Friday evening in Waverly.

The Lady Tigers, who scored three goals in the first half and put together three additional tallies in the second half, were led by Zoiee Smith, who put together a dominating performance by collecting the final four goals of the match to go along with an assist, where Smith found Loren Moran for the game’s opening goal. Moran, too, had a standout performance herself by collecting two goals and an assist on the evening. The pair combined for an astounding 14 points between them as Waverly overwhelmed Piketon behind a 35 to 1 advantage in shots on goal.

However, according to Waverly head coach Chris Murphy, it was the Tigers’ defensive efforts that allowed Waverly to convert as many times as it did on the offensive end of the field.

“We did a good job of playing aggressive defensively,” Waverly head coach Chris Murphy said. “We never allowed Piketon to get into a rhythm. I want to compliment the Piketon coaching staff and team on their perseverance. They never hung their heads and fought to the final whistle.”

In addition to the duo, Breanna Murphy collected two assists — one each to Moran and Smith — to round out the strong performance from the Tigers.

With the victory, Waverly will head into its next contest, a Wednesday evening (6 p.m.) nonconference bout with Albany Alexander at home, with a 1-0 record. Piketon, who will host Northwest at 5 p.m. on Tuesday evening, fell to 0-1 with the loss.
