Make no mistake about it, the Class of 2017 at Clay High School was a very special one when it came down to performing on the field of play.
However, the classes immediately following it are definitely not ones to slouch on, either.
Caleb Cline and Hunter Armstrong were able to shoot 46s to continue their strong individual campaigns, Tyler Hobbs and Chase Hudson followed with strokes of 48 and 52, and the Clay Panthers took home the initial salvo in an SOC I Match on Wednesday at Little Scioto in Wheelersburg.
Clay, who took home the victory behind its overall team stroke of 192, received excellent efforts up and down the board as the difference between the first and sixth place finishers on the team (with Tyler Phillips and Teddy McCall shooting a 53 and a 54, respectively) was only eight strokes. The Panthers were able to edge Eastern by a baker’s dozen en route to the match victory.
For fellow SOC I hand Notre Dame, their efforts in the match were also quite solid, as Spencer Wilcox and Tyler Speas each collected a pair of 49s to lead the Titans while Jared Redoutey sat just three strokes back of the pair with his 52. Kyle McGraw (69) took home the final scoring slot for Notre Dame and Connor Madden, along with Abigail Veazey, rounded out the efforts for the Titans, who finished with an overall team score of 219, 14 strokes back of Eastern.
South Webster, who has two first-year golfers in its main rotation and two additional first-year golfers in the high school program, also showed promise with its performance on Wednesday evening by collecting a 230 to round out the field. Third-year golfers Jacob Witter and Dylan Bond collected a 51 and a 54 to head the charge while Andrew Smith and Josh Hammond — two of the four first-year golfers, in addition to Levi Murphy and Timmy Melvin — collected strokes of 58 and 67, respectively, to round out the team scoring.
