In any sport, competitiveness is a good quality to see.

Tuesday’s match between a quartet of Southern Ohio Conference foes was certainly one that would be a favorite of those who love competition, as Clay, Eastern, Notre Dame, and West each participated in a quad-match.

At the end of the day, all four units sat just 32 strokes apart from first to fourth — and just 13 apart between the first through third place finishers — in a splendid nine-hole match at Shawnee Golf Course in West Portsmouth on Tuesday.

Ultimately, the three Scioto County units weren’t able to fend off a strong effort by Eastern, who took home the victory by shooting a 197 as a team. Andrew Cochenour used his overall score of 43 to head the charge for the Eagles and take home overall medalist honors for the match.

Clay, Notre Dame, and West, however, didn’t do too shabby, to say the least.

After battling down to the wire for the runner-up spot in the match, the consistency of the Senators’ lineup ultimately paid dividends as West edged Clay, 208 to 210, behind three scores that were at or lower than a 51 on the scorecard. Junior Brady Whitt led the way for the Senators with his scorecard of 50 en route to a third place finish as an individual, while freshman Eli Adkins and senior Ethan Daniel each put together strokes of 51 on the day. Dustin Sowards, a sophomore for West, rounded out the scoring with his round of 56.

As far as the Panthers were concerned, Caleb Cline put together an excellent day for Clay as the senior was able to join Cochenour in the under-50 club with his round of 49. Cline took a firm grip of the runner-up position as a result.

Fellow senior Hunter Armstrong ended up shooting a 51 to join Adkins and Daniel in what ended up being a tie for fifth place, while junior teammates Tyler Phillips and Chase Hudson rounded out the scoring by collecting rounds of 54 and 56, respectively, in the nine-hole quad-match.

Notre Dame, who rounded out the field with its score of 229, was led by Tyler Speas and Spencer Wilcox, who each shot rounds of 53 to tie for 10th place overall. Jared Redoutey, who collected a score of 56, and Connor Madden, who recorded a 67 on his scorecard, rounded out the field.

West is scheduled to host a tri-match against South Webster and Green at Shawnee Golf Course on Thursday at 10 a.m., while Clay and Notre Dame will be playing in the Portsmouth Invitational, which also commences on Thursday at 10 a.m.
