Mid-South men’s soccer, volleyball polls released

The Shawnee State men’s soccer program was selected to tie for fifth place in the Mid-South Conference preseason coaches’ poll on Wednesday morning.

The Bears were tied for the fifth most votes with Life (Ga.), with both teams finishing with 22 votes in the poll. Shawnee State finished alone in fifth place last season with a 5-12-1 overall record and a 2-4-1 mark in the conference. SSU was also picked to finish fifth in last season’s preseason poll.

Conference co-champion Campbellsville (Ky.) was picked to defend their title this season, receiving 46 votes. Lindsey Wilson (Ky.), the Mid-South Conference’s other co-champion, finished with 45 votes to take second. Both Campbellsville (Ky.) and Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) received four first place votes apiece.

Shawnee State starts the season on Sunday, August 20 when they host Saint Xavier University (Ill.) at Shawnee Turf. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

SSU volleyball program slated to finish eighth in MSC Poll

The Shawnee State volleyball program was selected to finish eighth in the Mid-South Conference preseason poll, according to conference officials on Wednesday afternoon.

The Bears received nine votes in the preseason poll this season, finishing two votes behind Pikeville. Shawnee State will look to improve on a season where the Bears finished 5-25 overall and went winless in conference play en route to an eighth place finish. Shawnee State was selected seventh in last season’s Mid-South preseason poll.

Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) was picked to repeat as champions in 2017 after winning both the Mid-South Conference regular season and tournament championships. The Blue Raiders received 49 votes and seven of the eight first place votes available. Georgetown (Ky.), last season’s runner-up, received the other first place vote and finished second in the poll.

Shawnee State volleyball gets its season underway on August 25 and 26 when they travel to Montreat, North Carolina to participate in the Volley in the Mountains Classic.
