Victory is sweet when it is obtained.

Especially when it’s hard work that is the determining factor in obtaining a conference title.

That’s what SOC II singles player Drew Jackson can say about his latest accomplishment, as Wheelersburg’s top singles player and the No. 1 overall seed in this year’s SOC II Singles Tournament Championship nabbed an individual conference championship for the school by defeating Brandon Nibert of Waverly in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, to capture the crown in a hard-fought battle on Wednesday evening at the William E. Daehler Tennis Courts on the campus of Shawnee State University.

Jackson, who also defeated Waverly’s Shane Hitchins in the semifinals (6-1, 6-3), never lost a match over the entire tournament. Nibert, who defeated Minford’s Caden Wilcox (6-0, 6-0) to reach the finals of the singles tournament and was the No. 2 overall seed in the bracket, gave Jackson a challenge, but Jackson ultimately won the clash of the titans to take home the championship and the SOC II’s Player of the Year Award.

Wheelersburg and Waverly, however, weren’t done facing each other in head-to-head battles.

On the doubles side of the SOC II Tournament Bracket, Wheelersburg’s Seth Pertuset and Carson McCorkle tried to take down the top-seeded doubles tandem in Waverly’s Ryan Dunn and Chase Downing. However, Pertuset and McCorkle were unable to do so as Dunn and Downing handled their chores, defeating Pertuset and McCorkle, 6-2, 6-0 to advance to the finals.

In the second doubles affair, Wheelersburg’s Ben Allen and Nic Jones — the No. 2 overall seed in the doubles tournament — went down to the wire in a tough head-to-head battle with Christian Breech and Devon Bradley as the duo battled it out, especially in the first set, where it took 10 games to decide a winner.

When the dust settled, however, Allen and Jones emerged from the crowd unscathed, as the duo took not only the first set, 6-4 but the second set as well, 6-1, to set up a grudge match between the top two seeds in the doubles bracket — who split their regular season meetings.

Initially, Dunn and Downing got the jump on Allen and Jones by dominating the first set en route to a 6-1 victory and looked to be an excellent position to take the match in straight sets. However, Allen and Jones managed to rally back into the fray, and despite a hard-fought challenge from the duo, took the second set, 6-4, to force a match-deciding third set.

There, the quartet, as they did in the second set, fought over 10 hard-fought games en route to deciding a winner. Ultimately, however, Wheelersburg wasn’t able to sweep both singles and doubles tournament titles as Dunn and Downing claimed the third and final set by a 6-4 tally.

Following the conclusion of the tournament, the four semifinalists in singles play (Hitchins, Jackson, Nibert, and Wilcox) were all named All-SOC, as well as the two finalists in doubles play (Allen/Jones and Dunn/Downing).

Each of the units involved in the SOC II tournament will begin their journey into postseason play when the Division II Sectional Tournament starts next Monday and Tuesday. The tournament site will be held at Portsmouth High School.
