If the Clay Panthers want to win their fourth straight SOC I golf title, they’ll need to play catch-up.

In the first SOC I golf match of the year, South Webster finished with a low score of 196 on Wednesday morning at the Little Scioto Golf Course in Wheelersburg.

The Jeeps were led by Luke Collins, who finished with a nine-hole score of 47. South Webster finished 14 strokes ahead of second-place Clay, winners of 13 of the last 14 SOC I golf championships. Eastern (211) and Notre Dame (222) rounded out the top four team scores.

Elias Montgomery of Western finished as the match medalist with a low score of 42, though the Indians did not have enough golfers to qualify for a team score. Clay’s Wyatt Large finished one stroke behind Montgomery with a 43, while Eastern’s Cole Haislop and Notre Dame’s Truman Hash each finished with a 44.

Tuesday’s match was the first of five SOC I matches this season. The lowest combined score throughout the season earns the conference championship. The next SOC I match will take place on Aug. 19 at Big Beaver Creek Golf Course in Piketon.

In the SOC II, West won its second-straight quad match by shooting a low score of 172 on Wednesday evening at The Elks Country Club. The Senators beat out Wheelersburg (207), Northwest (215) and Minford (216), taking first place by over 30 strokes.

West’s Jordan Tieman and Wheelersburg’s Mitchell McFarland were both named match medalists, as each shot a 33 in the nine-hole span. Marty Knittel of West was the match’s third-place finisher with a score of 45.

Though the four teams to take part in Wednesday’s match were all members of the SOC II, it did not count in the standings as an official conference match. The first SOC II match will take place on Aug. 27 at Dogwood Country Club in Chillicothe.
