Tiffany Bise tossed a complete game four-hitter as the University of Rio Grande posted a 4-2 victory in game two of its doubleheader with Montreat College on Sunday afternoon, completing a four-game weekend series sweep of the host Cavaliers at chilly, windblown Roxy Hines Memorial Field.
The RedStorm, who won Sunday’s opening contest, 11-8, upped their season mark to 15-6.
Montreat slipped to 6-22 with the two losses.
Bise, a senior from Circleville, Ohio and the reigning River States Conference Pitcher of the Week, allowed a second inning run when the Cavaliers collected half of their hit total – a leadoff double by Karley Yeager and a two-out RBI single by Kelsey Nolasco – but then retired 10 straight batters beginning with the final out of the second.
In the interim, Rio grabbed a lead it would never relinquish.
The RedStorm tied the game in the fourth when senior Cheyenne Hamaker led off with a single, stole second, was bunted to third and scored when sophomore Carly Skeese’s grounder to shortstop was errored.
Rio scored its final three runs in the sixth on a throwing error and sacrifice flies by junior Taylor Arndt and sophomore Kelsey Conkey.
Montreat parlayed a pair of hits and a wild pitch by Bise into a sixth inning run, but Bise retired the side in order for the fourth time in the game in the seventh to seal the win.
Hamaker and freshman Michaela Criner had two hits each and junior Gabby Gregg had a pair of doubles in the victory. Bise earned her third win in four decisions.
Allison Moody started and took the loss for Montreat.
In game one, Rio Grande held off its host in a game which featured 19 runs, 19 hits, seven combined errors and eight walks by Cavalier pitchers.
The RedStorm took a 4-0 second inning lead thanks to a sacrifice fly by Criner, a two-run double by Hamaker and an error on the Hamaker double which allowed another run to score.
Rio added another run in the third to make it 5-0, but Montreat countered with four runs in the bottom of the frame thanks to a trio of hits and two RedStorm errors. Mikki Shelton had a run-scoring groundout, Cailin Warner had an RBI double and Yeager tacked on a run-scoring single in the inning.
Rio rebounded, though, scoring three times in both the fourth and fifth innings to open up an 11-4 lead. Senior Kari Jenkins (Jackson, OH) had a two-run single and Gregg added an RBI groundout in the fourth, while Skeese hit a three-run inside-the-park home run in the fifth.
The Cavaliers mounted a three-run rally of their own in the sixth via RBI singles by Aubree Sluder, Shelton and Aly Woody to make it 11-7 and another run scored thanks to a RedStorm error in the seventh, but the comeback effort ended there.
Conkey had two hits in the winning effort, while Criner added a double. Junior Mallory Powell started and allowed five hits and four runs – two earned – over four innings for the win.
Yeager and Sluder had three hits each in the loss for Montreat, while Cavalier starter Josie Harris lasted just 1-2/3 innings en route to suffering the loss.
