With the crowd chanting, “We want it more,” the Minford Falcons showed how badly they wanted the win Friday night against the Ironton Tigers, beating them with a final score of 58-47. Leading them to their victory was Matthew Gullett.
“We had a rough second and third quarter there. He (Gullett) stepped up as the senior leader, hit some big shots four us and took care of the basketball in the fourth quarter,” said Coach Josh Shoemaker.
Gullett made 15 points from one-two pointer, one-three pointer and 10 of 12 free throws.
Another major MVP of the night for the Falcons was Tyler Compton, who made 14 points from five-twos and four of five free throws.
It was a rough game that was a real fight until the very end, with Minford not taking the win until the final quarter.
“We outscored them 27-7 in the first quarter. We could’ve quit, but the kids really dug down and won a championship,” Shoemaker commented.
Minford has had an incredible season, fighting for win after win. Shoemaker had plenty to be happy about with this group.
“I’m proud of the kids. To get 14 wins for this senior group is a great reflection of how hard these kids have worked, and I’m just happy they get to continue playing at the convo,” the coach stated.
Minford has a week off before hitting the convo, and Shoemaker says they will utilize this time.
“We’re going to continue getting better,” he said. “We’re going to grow and continue playing for district championship.”
