Shawnee State tennis began their season on Saturday, with the men’s team picking up a historic first win in program history and the women also cruising to a 7-2 victory at Mount Vernon Nazarene.
Men’s tennis got their first win out of the way early, with the duo of Nick Johnson and Zack Colley winning the first doubles match of the day by a score of 8-1. Matthew Bryant and Rodney Spriggs would win 8-4, and Clint Burk and Tyler Sherwood scored an 8-2 victory to give SSU a sweep of the doubles matches.
Nick Johnson would then win his singles match 6-1, 6-1 to give Shawnee State their fourth win of the day. Matthew Bryant then won his singles match to clinch the SSU victory (6-4, 4-6, 7-5), and Zack Colley and Rodney Spriggs would also win their matches to put the icing on the cake of Shawnee State’s first ever men’s tennis match victory. Caleb Moore and Drew Howard would also nab Shawnee State wins in the sixth and seventh singles matches.
The Shawnee State women would not get off to a good start as Shelby Hay and Adrianna Johnson lost their doubles match. However, Kendi Congrove and Megan Meyers would win their doubles match 8-5, and Caleigh O’Neal and Katy Singer overcame a 5-6 deficit to win their doubles match 8-6 to give Shawnee State the lead in the match.
Shelby Hay would rebound to win her singles match (6-4, 6-2). Caleigh O’Neal, Katy Singer, and Abby Brinkman all got wins of their own to clinch the Shawnee State victory. Kendi Congrove and Megan Meyers were defeated, but the Bears would win the match 6-3.
The Shawnee State men and women both start their seasons off 1-0. Mount Vernon Nazarene kick off their seasons with 0-1 starts.
The Bears will get over a month off until March 22nd when they return to action against Ohio Christian.
