This past week saw many local girls basketball teams’ seasons come to end as they dropped out of sectionals. However, several teams fought through and will be entering into district playoffs this week.
Among those teams no longer competing are East, Clay, Western, Green, Portsmouth, West and Northwest.
Only the strongest have prevailed. The remaining teams are Minford, Eastern, Wheelersburg, Piketon, Notre Dame, New Boston, Oak Hill, South Webster and Ironton. The majority of these teams will play either Wedneday night or Saturday.
Wednesday will determine which two teams face off for the district. Notre Dame will meet Federal Hocking at 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday at Jackson High School. Following at 8 p.m. Eastern will play New Boston. The winners of these two games, will hit the court March 2nd at Jackson High School.
The Minford Falcons will face Alexander Saturday at noon at Waverly High School. Wheelersburg will follow as they meet up against North Adams at 1:45 p.m. The winner of these two match ups will play on March 3rd for the district title.
Meanwhile, at Jackson High School, the South Webster Jeeps will compete against Belpre at 1:45 p.m.
The following Monday Piketon will play Fairland, and Oak Hill will play Lynchburg-Clay, both at Waverly High School. The winner of those competitions will compete for district on March 4th at Waverly High School.
These teams have battled hard to come so far in the season, but as more and more teams continue to drop off, the victors start to tower.
