The Waverly Tigers girls basketball team had a tough tournament loss against Unioto, ending the season with a 56-44 loss. Still, the team played hard and fought for every point they made.
“I am so proud of our team and the way we competed tonight. We left it all out on the floor and can hold our heads high,” stated Waverly Girls Basketball Head Coach John Bonifield.
Leading all scorers was Unioto’s Jocie Fisher with 24 points from 11 two pointers and two of two free throws. She was supported by Summer Sigman, who scored 10 for Unioto. Sigman had two-twos and two-threes.
The team relied heavily on Laken Smith for their offensive plays. Smith has been leading the Tigers all season.
“Laken finished out her stellar career with another great performance. What she has meant to our team and program is immeasurable. She has carried the burden all year and has performed well beyond our expectations,” Bonifield stated.
Smith scored 22 points from six-two point baskets, two-three point baskets and four of seven free throws.
Waverly will be losing Smith as well as three other seniors thisyear.
“Our four seniors (Madison, Mariah, Hannah, and Laken) were so dedicated and committed to our program. It’s hard to see them go. They put together back to back winning seasons for the first time in over a decade. We hope to continue building what they started,” Bonifield stated.
Though the loss ends their tournament run, the Tigers are ready to get to work continuing to improve and preparing for next year.
