The Waverly Lady Tigers took on some aggressive Portsmouth Trojans over the weekend. The Tigers were persistent and clawed their way to a 59-50 win.

“Portsmouth battled us tonight, and we were fortunate to come away with a win,” Waverly Head Coach John Bonifield stated.

Leading Waverly to victory was Laken Smith, with an impressive 27 points. Smith shot for seven-two point field goals, two-three point field goals and eight of 12 free throws. Morgan Wiseman also played a tough game, score 16 points from two-twos, three-threes and two of four free throws.

“Laken did what she’s been doing for us all year long. She’s playing at a high level and moved into second place all-time scoring in girls basketball at Waverly,” boasted Bonifield. “She now has over 1500 points and over 900 rebounds for her career. Morgan and Kami (Knight) also gave us much needed points and rebounds.”

The Trojans played hard, but they just couldn’t keep up with players like Smith. Leading Portsmouth was Mya Williams, who made 15 points. Supporting Williams was Hannah Hughes and Semajah Parker, who each scored 11.
