‘Burg team named Academic All-Ohio

The Wheelersburg Pirates have proven that they not only excel on the football field but also in the classroom. The Wheelersburg 2016 Football Team, who made it to the regional finals, was recently honored by the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association with the distinction Academic All – Ohio Team.

“This honor is given out to selected teams baste on their team GPA. The top 22 players from the team’s 1st quarter GPAs are combined, and the Pirates turned in an impressive 3.76 GPA,” Head Football Coach Rob Woodward stated.

The Pirates have been honored with the designation for the past five years and seven times in the last eight years.

“The Wheelersburg Football team had 27 players on this year’s roster who achieved a 3.5 GPA or higher the first grading period,” stated Woodward.

He added that three senior members of the football team were also selected as Academic All-Ohio athletes. In order to be named an Adademic All-Ohio athelte, students must be seniors who are selected as an All conference or All District player with a 3.6 GPA or higher throughout their high school careers.

“Wheelersburg Seniors Tanner Bivens, Keaton Newsome, and Taylor Doerr were all selected as Academic All Ohio Athletes. They join 10 other Wheelersburg athletes who have earned this honor over the last 8 years,” Woodward commented.
