Men’s Basketball face Cumberland on Thursday night

The Bears start a long home stand against the Phoenix

Shawnee State men’s basketball return to Portsmouth on Thursday, starting a five game home stand against Cumberland (Tenn.) in Mid-South Conference play.

The Bears hold a 7-10 overall record and are 0-5 in the Mid-South Conference. Shawnee State fell to Campbellsville 79-71 on Saturday afternoon. The Bears were without Frederick Moore or J Murrell as both missed the game due to health.

Cumberland are 8-9 and sit 1-4 in the Mid-South. The Phoenix fell to #12 Pikeviille 84-59 on Saturday.

Portsmouth native Jayllen Carter continues to lead the way for Shawnee State, averaging a team-high 15.5 points per game. Frederick Moore, who has missed the last three games due to injury, is still SSU’s leading rebounder at 7.9 per game, and has chipped in 12.5 points per game as well. Tamal Watkins is the only other Bear in double figures, averaging 10.8 points per game.

Diondrey Holt, Jr. leads Cumberland in scoring at 16.9 points per game, while Jamonte Graham has chipped in 13.1 per game.

Shawnee State are 4-5 all-time against Cumberland, with all nine games coming since Cumberland joined the Mid-South Conference for the 2012-13 season. The Phoenix won last year’s matchup in Portsmouth, an 85-84 double overtime thriller on January 16th. Shawnee State got revenge on February 11th, defeating Cumberland 63-61 in Lebanon.
