There were cold courts across the area Thursday night when some wintry weather left many girls basketball teams unable to play.

Light snow started early afternoon Thursday across the county, which many local school districts dismissing around noon. By game time, parts of the region had up to three inches, and roadways were treacherous, especially rural and side roads.

11 games were scheduled for the evening, giving area athletes an unexpected day off. Such games include: Wheelersburg at West, Northwest at Valley, East at Notre Dame, Waverly at Minford, Clay at Symmes Valley, New Boston at Eastern, Oak Hill at South Webster, Westfall at Piketon, Chesapeake at Ironton, Portsmouth at Fairland and Green at Western.

Like other coaches in the area, Valley Head Coach Mark Merritt said he is unsure as to when the game will be rescheduled. Many coaches are expecting to know when the games will be played by the end of next week.

With many of the teams recently coming back from Christmas break, some teams are concerned they may cool down. Notre Dame, for example, has not played since Dec. 22. Their next scheduled game will be Monday at New Boston.

Merritt, however, does not expect a canceled game to change the season for the Lady Indians.

“I don’t think it will impact my girls,” he stated before adding that they the Indians have another game coming up.

Valley is scheduled to play Coal Grove at 6:30 Saturday. They will also play Wheelersburg on the road on Monday.

Other games scheduled for Saturday include Green at Rock Hill, Manchester at New Boston, Clay at Southern and West Union at Western. Monday games include West at Waverly, Symmes Valley at Green, Eastern at Clay, South Webster at Minford, Northwest at Oak Hill, East at Western, Ironton at South Point and Rock Hill at Portsmouth.

West is not scheduled to play again until Thursday at home also against Valley.

The National Weather Service had issued winter weather advisory in effect until 1 a.m. Friday; thus, boys games scheduled for Friday may also be impacted. Those games include Notre Dame at Clay, Valley at South Webster, Waverly at Northwest, Green at Eastern, Western at Symmes Valley, New Boston at East, West at Minford, Wheelersburg at Oak Hill, Huntington at Piketon, Rock Hill at Ironton, Portsmouth at Chesapeake and Raceland at Greenup Co.
