PIKEVILLE, KY. – Shawnee State men’s basketball took a 10 point lead into halftime but couldn’t hold off #19 Pikeville as they fell 69-61 to start the Mid-South Conference schedule.
Shawnee State would lead most of the first half, building a lead to as much as 11 points before ending the half with a 10 point advantage, shooting 56.5% from the field in the half. The Bears would then lead UPike by as many as 12 in the second half, but a total of 22 turnovers would hamper Shawnee State as Pikeville would come back to take the lead and close the game with free throws down the stretch.
Jayllen Carter (JR/Portsmouth, Ohio) led Shawnee State with a game-high 18 points. Frederick Moore (JR/Cincinnati, Ohio) added a double-double, with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Jacob Daniels (SR/Peebles, Ohio) added 10 points and eight rebounds.
Pikeville’s balanced attack was led by Rze Culbreath’s 14 points. Jordan Perry had 12, Darrion Leslie 11, and Trey Rakes 10.
With the loss, Shawnee State falls to 5-4 on the season and start Mid-South Conference play 0-1. Pikeville improve to 11-1 and are 1-0 in the league.
Shawnee State are next in action on Monday, November 28th when they travel to Williamsburg, Kentucky to take on Cumberlands. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:00pm.
