The Wheelersburg Pirates won a Division III Sectional Championship after beating the Rock Hill Redmen in straight sets Saturday.
The Pirate volleyball program is 19-4 overall with a 14-0 SOC mark.
“I’m really proud of my girls this season because we’ve had to change it up a lot with positions, and really come together and work hard as a team,” Pirates coach Kendra Coleman said. “They have really worked hard. They’ve come together has a team and they’ve gotten the job done, and I’m proud of them for that.”
Leading the way for Wheelersburg was Kasey Bergan who recorded 13 points, nine kills and eight digs.
“I commend Kasey because I had to switch her position this year,” Coleman said. “She’s one of those gifted athletes who can do everything and I needed her for my offense, so I switched her to an outside hitter this year. I also needed her in serve-receive because she’s that all-around athlete. She really stepped up and changed her position with out any problems, and she’s been a big part of my offense this year.”
Makayla Akers also contributed to the Wheelersburg offense, finishing with eight kills.
“Makayla has really stepped into her role as a leader this year,” Coleman said. “She’s always focused and she plays with a lot of passion. She really wants to succeed and she really cares about her team. She’s done a very nice job as a senior captain this year. She’s really taken charge and she leads by example on the court.”
Defensively, Ellie Ruby once again led the Pirates with 14 digs.
“I’m really proud of Ellie. She is just a vacuum on the court,” Coleman said. “She has a lot of energy and she’s not going to let that ball drop unless she’s on the floor going for it. She’s just really stepped up this season. On defense, she’s just everywhere. I’m really proud of her.”
Wheelersburg will play in the district semifinals Tuesday night in Waverly.
