The 10th annual Agriculture Adventure Day was held at the Scioto County Fairgrounds Wednesday.

The event brought hundreds of area elementary students to the fairgrounds to learn about various aspects of agriculture in the community.

“This is our 10th year doing this. Which is a milestone for us and we are very proud to be offering this program to area students,” said Leanne Fuhrmann, Coordinator of the Scioto County AG Adventure Day. “This year we have a little more than 450 students participating from the Minford, Valley, Clay, New Boston, Portsmouth East and Notre Dame School Districts.”

While at Adventure Day, students visit 19 stations. Fuhrmann said a couple of new stations were added this year.

“We added a grain station this year. The students get to grind the grain and the students are shown how to make corn mill. We are focusing a lot on corn production this year. The kids are learning a lot about how it’s produced, seeing the grains after they are harvested and seeing what products have corn in them that are most unfamiliar to students,” Fuhrmann said. “The kids are leaning how corn can be used for a number of purposes, including recycling and renewable resources.”

She said corn was not intended to be the theme of this years Adventure Day, it just turned out that way with some of this year’s presenters.

“We do have our traditional, popular booths back this year including one on Bees, wildlife and many others,” Fuhrmann said.

When asked what the students get out of such an event, Fuhrmann said, “This is an opportunity for the students to get out of the classroom for some hands on learning. Today is a good break for the students and for them to learn how agriculture effects them in some way or another.”

Each year students from around the county are invited to submit designs for an Adventure Day T-shirt that’s given to participants.

This year’s design winner was Alexis Hammond of Clay Local Schools. Second place went to Claire Sanford of Clay Local Schools and third place went to Laiken Combs of Minford Local School District.
