Armed man holds law enforcement at bay for hours

Frank Lewis

PDT Staff Writer

A heavily armed man who held law enforcement at bay for several hours, and even fired shots, faces several charges.

Waverly Police Chief Larry Roe says Michael Blevins, 62, is charged with two counts of unlawful possession of a dangerous ordnance, vandalism of government property, and several other charges.

Roe said, around 11:49 p.m. Saturday, police received a complain of a man with a gun at 602 Walnut St. in Waverly. The complaint alleged that a man later identified as Blevins, had fired a shot inside the bedroom of the home and then made threatening statements toward others.

For several hours police attempted to get Blevins to cooperate with no success. Since it was reported that Blevins had several firearms in the residence and had made threats, the decision was made to attempt to gain entry into the residence.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol SRT Team responded, along with deputies from the Pike County Sheriff’s Department. Several residences had to be evacuated before the OSHP dispatched a robot inside the residence.

Once Blevins was located inside the home, a larger robot was sent in. When Blevins saw the robot, he opened fire with a small caliber pistol. A short time later the team made entry and took Blevins into custody.

Due to health issues and Blevins being highly intoxicated, he was transported to Adena Pike Hospital as a precautionary measure. Roe said he will also be evaluated by mental health officials before being transported to jail.

A search warrant was issued and several firearms were confiscated and taken from the residence. In addition to the stated charges, Blevins will be facing other charges and will have his case present to the next term of the Pike County grand jury.

Roe took the opportunity to thank the OSHP and the Pike County Sheriff’s Department for their assistance in the incident.
