The Farmer’s Market, sponsored by Main Street Portsmouth, has returned for another season to the Roy Rogers Esplanade in downtown Portsmouth.
“We have a collection of vendors with things like organic meats, baked goods, honeys, jams, planted flowers, and some vegetables,” Main Street Portsmouth Interim Director Sarah Surina said.
Surina herself was offering fresh honey for sale.
“My brother is a beekeeper and this is his honey,” Surina said. “It’s a mixture of alfalfa, black locust and honeysuckle. He doesn’t heat it up. It just comes straight off the hive. I’ll be here to sell it all season.”
Surina said the Farmer’s Market will run into October featuring in-season produce such as broccoli, cabbage, asparagus, beans, corn, squash, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, apples, peaches, melons, tomatoes, potatoes and sweet potatoes, and homegrown fresh frozen beef from a local farm. Fresh eggs are regularly available in addition to home baked breads, pies, cookies, cakes and candies.
“We do this to give people the chance to buy local goods from their local area,” Surina said. “There are no resellers. You can’t go outside purchase fruits and vegetables and sell them here. You have to home produce and home make them here.”
Main Street Portsmouth is nonprofit organization that utilizes the approach developed by the National Main Street program. The organization’s mission is to preserve the historic integrity of downtown Portsmouth and the historic Boneyfiddle district.
