Smiles and laughter were visible Friday as Hillview Retirement Center hosted its annual Holiday Bazaar and Luncheon, with more than 500 people— composed of residents of Hillview and members of the local community.
Sandra Wheeler is a resident of Hillview who has worked in conjunction with Margaret Gordley, and Janet Shuter to serve as tri-chairs of the Fundraising Auxiliary at Hillview since 2008. Wheeler said the Luncheon and Bazaar is an event the residents greatly anticipate each year.
“The annual Luncheon and Bazaar is always a wonderful time of fellowship which she and the other residents look forward to. It has been going for 30 years, and it is composed of things that the residents make, such as crafts and baked breads,” Wheeler said.
Anna Linck, a resident of Hillview since June 1999, said the event is truly something that the residents appreciate.
“Everything is so pretty and decorated, I wish that I could have helped. Due to my health, I have not been able to help with this year’s event, but it is always a big deal for the people who get to help with it. The residents look forward to this event, they take part, prepare things such as baked goods, candy and so forth,” Linck said.
Howard Harcha has been a resident of Hillview for nine years, and said the event adds a nice dimension to the retirement center.
“We always enjoy having the community here to participate in our Bazaar. We are just delighted to have everyone here, and we enjoy the fellowship,” Harcha said.
Wheeler said within the last five years, they have invited vendors to come in from the community, to set up tables and sell at the event. Seven vendors participated, from hand-made jewelry and crafts, to homemade bread and fudge. She said the proceeds raised from the Bazaar go to benefit patient services at Hillview, and are split evenly between the Resident Council, and the Auxiliary at Hillview.
Wheeler said Hillview will continue to host the Holiday Luncheon and Bazaar for the residents and community.
