The Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra (PSO) is scheduled to present its annual Holiday Pops Concert on Saturday, Dec. 8 at the Vern Riffe Center For the Arts, on the campus of Shawnee State University. This marks the 20th season the PSO has presented a Holiday Pops Concert.

According to PSO director Dr. Carl Daehler the performance will include a number of holiday hits including, Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride,” “Let it Snow,” the “Hallelujah Chorus” from Handel’s “Messiah” and the annual carol sing-a-long. The orchestra will also perform the concert suite from the movie, “The Polar Express.”

The PSO Chorale is under the direction of Justin Wiget, and will perform such musical numbers as Part I of “Christus,” Op. 97 by the Romantic German composer Felix Mendelssohn, and the popular “O Holy Night” by Adolphe Adam. The combined ensembles will also perform “Somewhere in My Memory” and “Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas” by John Williams taken from the popular “Home Alone” film series.

Scheduled to make his annual appearance is Steve Free and his band. They are expected to preform his song, “Just a Baby Boy” among others.

According to its website (www.portsmouthsymphony.com), “our concerts feature the very best in classical and pops music performed by an accomplished ensemble of fifty local and regional musicians. We are excited to welcome some new talented young people and experienced players to our orchestra. The concerts are entertaining and suitable for all ages. Our outstanding musicians, many of whom are your neighbors, friends, and teachers, are joined by accomplished soloists and guest performers from the tri-state area. The PSO Board continues to work hard to bring to Southern Ohio a performing organization worthy of being called a symphony orchestra. Along with the added talents of the Portsmouth Symphony Chorale, we strive to present family-friendly concerts at an affordable ticket price.”

Membership in the PSO is open to all local and regional musicians. Rehearsals are held each Monday night at the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts. For more information about the orchestra, call Carl Daehler at 740-351-3088.

The performance is scheduled to take place at 7:30 p.m. tickets may be purchased at the VRCFA Box Office or by calling 740-351-3600 or by visiting ticketmaster.com.
