Coin collectors come to Portsmouth

By WAYNE ALLEN

PDT Staff Writer

Representatives with National Coin Collectors Association are at the Holiday Inn in Portsmouth through Saturday purchasing coins, paper currency, gold, silver and other unusual items.

The event has been going on since Tuesday, and according to Eddie Stambaugh, a vice president with the National Coin Collectors Association, people have been bringing in some interesting items.

“Things have been going great,” Stambaugh said. “We’ve had a steady flow of people and we’ve bought some great coins and a lot of scrap jewelry. Folks in this area have a ton of scrap jewelry.”

He said earlier this week they wrote a check for $1,700 for a sterling silverware set.

“That’s the most we’ve paid for an item since we’ve been here. We’ve written a lot of checks for between $1,000 and $1,200,” Stambaugh said.

He said they have purchased more than 350 silver dollars this week.

According to released information from the National Coin Collectors Association, “there is no limit to the number of pieces that can be brought in. Nearly all coins, paper currency, vintage jewelry and toys made prior to 1970 are highly sought after. Keep an open mind when going through your attic and closets because something of little value to you could turn out to be of the highest quality. Whether you have an old pocket watch, coins or a class ring, NCCA (National Coin Collectors Association) has specialists that will assess it and test it for free. Your ‘junk’ could turn into your fortune!”

Remaining show hours are Thursday and Friday 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Portsmouth Downtown, 711 Second St., Portsmouth.
