A Scioto County man wanted on a warrant charging escape, was able to escape again for a short time Sunday. Jared Fairchild, 29, of 5907 Farney Ave., Sciotoville, faces charges of assault, burglary and escape, after running from authorities.

Scioto County Sheriff’s Deputy Luke Jenkins said he was sitting beside the Rite Aid parking lot in Wheelersburg when he spotted Fairchild in the passenger seat of a black Dodge truck. Jenkins recognized Fairchild from past incidents, and called dispatch to see if there were any outstanding warrants for him. Within minutes, Jenkins received word, there was a warrant for Fairchild for escape. Jenkins pulled up next to the truck and asked Fairchild to get out. When he leaned forward, Jenkins opened the passenger door and pulled him by his shirt. It was at that moment, Jenkins said, that Fairchild pulled away and ran with Jenkins giving chase. Fairchild rolled down a ditch, and Jenkins said he suffered cuts and scrapes when he fell five to six feet before landing on a rock.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol and Deputy Brian Nolen arrived at the scene, and the officers tried to set up a perimeter around the wooded area where they believed Fairchild had gone. Jenkins and Deputy Jonathan Page went into the woods to try to find Fairchild, but were unsuccesful. However, the Portsmouth Police Department reported a man fitting the description was seen acting suspiciously near 6404 East Front St., in Sciotoville. At the same time police had found clothes matching the description of Fairchild’s clothes in a carport.

Page and Jenkins arrived and found the clothing. When they discovered the homeowner had security video they checked it and saw Fairchild attempt to open the door handle and enter the home. They also saw Fairchild get a drink of water, and when he left the surveillance area he was then wearing a black shirt, black shorts and black socks. A short time later the Portsmouth Police Department found Fairchild walking through a yard on Bloom Street. Fairchild tried to run, but was apprehended, taken into custody and then incarcerated in the Scioto County Jail.
